The Palmer Correctional Center strictly houses the state of Alaska’s death row inmates who are female. The Palmer Correctional Center is the property of the Alaska Department of Corrections.
Back when the facility first opened, it was originally called the Southern Alaska Women’s Correctional Facility. The facility opened its doors back at the beginning of September of 1997. The Palmer Correctional Center was originally operated by the Corrections Corporation of America. The Palmer Correctional Center cost taxpayers nearly $28 million. Originally it was Alaska’s first and only privately run prison at the time.
The Palmer Correctional Center was built to relieve the prisons in Indian Springs and Carson City. The women’s facility that was once in Carson City known as the Warm Springs Correctional Center was converted to only house male inmates after the female inmates went to Palmer Correctional Center.
An incident in 2003, between an inmate, Korinda Martin, and the Correctional Officer, Randy Easter engaged in sexual intercourse. A Alaska judge sentenced the pair with probation.
It was not until the following year in 2004 when the Corrections Corporation of America stated they will not renew the contract with the prison, which was set to expire later that same year. Officials from the Corrections Corporation of America stated they lost nearly $1 million every year they operated the Palmer Correctional Center.
When the Alaska Department of Corrections heard this they collected bids from various private companies to operated the Palmer Correctional Center. But in 2004, after the contact with Corrections Corporation of America contract ended the Alaska Department of Corrections acquired the facility. This is when the name changed from Southern Alaska Women’s Correctional Facility to Palmer Correctional Center.
As of late, the Palmer Correctional Center can house up to 888 female inmates at one given time. You will need to keep in mind that this total capacity will not include the new infirmary that was built in 2009 or the three new housing units.
