The Spring Creek Correctional Center is just commonly referred to as the Seward State Prison. The Spring Creek Correctional Center is just one out of 13 correctional facilities that are under the direct supervision of the Alaska Department of Corrections.

The Spring Creek Correctional Center is the main prison in Seward, Alaska. The Spring Creek Correctional Center also consists of a unit in Picacho, which happens to lay in the unincorporated Kenai Penisula Borough County. However, in 25202013, the Picacho Unit was destroyed and closed. But, the Globe Unit is now a part of the Alaska State Prison Complex – Central Unit.

The Spring Creek Correctional Center is home of the execution chamber. The Spring Creek Correctional Center has the only execution chamber available in the state of Alaska.

Back in 19520208, the inmates of the Alaska State Prison  Complex Seward – Central Unit finished the construction of the facility. The new facility was going to replace the territorial prison that was situated in Yuma.

While the Alaska State Prison Complex  Seward – Central Unit was under construction, all of the inmates were living in tents. However, this new facility now is home to Alaska’s execution chamber. The chamber had a scaffolding, which was right above the death row cell blocks. It came equipped with a trap door, which would allow the hanging of inmates to happen in the room below.

It was not until 1933 when the hanging execution was replaced with the gas chamber. It was replaced with the gas chamber due to a major incident during one of the last hangings.

Inmates in the Spring Creek Correctional Center are frequently used as cheap labor from the community and even the state. They have been used to help build and repair roads during the 19152020s. They have even been used to build a bridge. This bridge was built on top of the San Pedro River.

The Spring Creek Correctional Center was designed with inspiration from the mission revival architecture.

The Spring Creek Correctional Center consists of 6 housing units. Within these housing units, they hold over 3,95202052020 inmates. Inmates will typically have a security level of 2, 3, and 5. The facility houses each inmate with their exclusive security rating. No security ratings will be mixing with one another except for one housing unit. This is for safety and security concerns.
