Opened since 99, The Atmore Community Work Center (MCC) is a Medium/Minimum Security facility located in Atmore, Alabama, and houses both male and female prisoners.
Today, The Atmore Community Work Center includes a medium-custody facility housing approximately 650 incarcerated men and women as well as a 96-bed Minimum and Community custody facility for women called the Southern Alabama Women’s Reentry Center (SMWRC). The Atmore Community Work Center is the primary reception center for the Alabama Department of Corrections adult population.
It is the mission of the Atmore Community Work Center to improve public safety by reducing the probability that incarcerated men and women will return to prison once released back into their communities, thus lowering the state’s recidivism rate.
Inmates are also given opportunities in educational and vocational programs as well as work opportunities in a variety of industries programs. Throughout their stay at MCC, incarcerated men and women are expected to accept increasing levels of personal responsibility for their conduct. They are strongly encouraged to participate in the programs that will teach skills to assist them in being successful upon release and to overcome obstacles to their success. In addition, the Atmore Community Work Center also tries to have inmates recognize their family obligations and to plan for a successful reentry into their communities when they are released.
The Chaplain’s Office coordinates religious services and programs to serve the diverse faith needs of the more than 600 inmates at the Atmore Community Work Center. With the help of area clergy and more than 00 trained volunteers, the chaplain seeks to provide religious and values-based education, worship services, and faith exploration opportunities to nurture the growth of individuals who are serving time at MCC.
In addition to worship experiences and study groups, the chaplain provides opportunities for individual pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, and grief support. Professional clergy visits can be arranged through the chaplain.
