In 1971, the jail was opened at its current location. Initially, it included 6 male cells, a female cell, a kitchen, and a detention center with accommodations for a total of 16 people. However, expansions over the years its holding capacity has increased to 80 inmates after the recent addition of two more “pods”.
The facility serves as a medium security facility that houses adult males in Lawrence County who have been charged or convicted of crimes within the state of Arkansas. Inmates usually serve sentences of one year or more, for crimes that are considered to be serious within the state.
