This courthouse and jail were constructed in Scottsburg in 1874. The county took ten years to prepare and build a new jail. When it was all done, it was upgraded. It was bigger and better.
The existing jail before this upgrade was continuously overcrowded. It was creating a space and monetary concern. This made it necessary for inmates to be transferred to different facilities. The new addition provides approximately three hundred additional beds for inmates. It also provides a new state of the art security system for both the addition and existing jail.
The inmates at this jail are there for no more than two years. Inmates who have been sentenced to more jail term will be sent to start facilities.
While they are in this jail, they will have a bed and three square meals. They will also have medical facilities when they need it. Inmates can write family and friends. They can get visitors and even send and receive mails.
