Arizona State Prison Complex Safford – Ft. Grant Unit opened its doors back in August 1860. It was nestled on the Arizona Territory as the Old West outpost. The Old West outpost was named after the Fort Breckinridge, in the junction of the San Pedro River and Aravaipa Creek. Then the Fort Breckinridge was demolished and the grounds were abandoned in 1861.
Then later on the Fort Breckinridge site was reoccupied and named as Camp Stanford, Fort Stanford, from 1862 to 1865 by the California Column troops.
