Opened since 1981, the High-Security Center is a maximum-security prison located in Safford Arizona that houses adult male inmates. The offenders at this facility are some of the most dangerous and violent inmates in the state of Arizona and require strict close custody security.
The current capacity of the High-Security Center is 138 male inmates. The average number of inmates daily is 93. Offenders are housed in six modules, two of which hold 24 beds each, and four others are comprised of 12 beds each.
Inmates are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are many educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.
The High-Security Center offers programs for inmates that include alcohol and substance abuse treatment, stress and anger management, and various religious services. All inmates are provided necessary medical, dental and mental health treatments.
As far as educational programs, inmates are offered Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), Special Education, and College CLEP Courses from the Community College of Arizona.
High-Security Center offers its inmates many other programs. AVATAR is a cognitive development program aimed at helping inmates overcome institutional adjustment issues. Think First assists inmates in developing pro-social skills in preparation for their return to the general population. Substance Abuse Relapse Prevention (SARP) is dialectical behavior therapy with an emphasis on impulse control. Stress and anger management programs are also offered, along with Alcoholic and Narcotic Anonymous meetings.
Religious services are available to inmates, as well as meetings with Clergy. A well-stocked legal and recreational library, classification board room, classroom, barber shop, and chapel also serve as support to the inmate population. Inmates are allowed recreation time each day where they can go outside and play sports or exercise.
