Established in 1872 and open ever since, Arizona Women’s Prison is a maximum-security prison located in Tucson, Arizona. Around 600 female inmates are housed here on any given day.
The Arizona Women’s Prison the oldest and first adult facility for females in the United States. Laurie Johnson is the current Warden of this prison.
Inmates placed according to their custody level, determined by their past criminal history and their sentence length. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates. The mission of Arizona Women’s Prison is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Arizona’s recidivism rate.
Arizona Women’s Prison offers a wide selection of programs, courses, and other activities based on inmate needs as well as available resources. While some are led by staff, many are volunteer-led. The following are some of the programs that are available:

In addition, Oakland City University offers Cosmetology, Culinary, Business Technology degrees to inmates at the Arizona Women’s Prison. Inmates are also able to earn their General Education Degrees.
Religious services, counseling, and meetings with Clergy are also available.
The Arizona Women’s Prison is unique in that this facility houses all the special populations of female offenders in the state of Arizona. The pregnant, sick, mentally ill, youthful, elderly, and high-profile female offenders are all housed at the Arizona Women’s Prison together. There are many challenges of managing such a diverse population, and many of the methods of treatment and rehabilitation for each population of offenders are customized to meet the needs of that specific population.
