Donovan State Prison Inmate Search and Prison Information
The Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility is commonly referred to as Donovan State Prison for short. The Donovan State Prison is situated in the southern unincorporated section of San Diego County, right near San Diego.
The Donovan State Prison is under the management and operation of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Donovan State Prison is the only state correctional facility in all of San Diego County. The facility is situated on 780 acres of land.
The Donovan State Prison is nestled on the mesa. The facility is just about 1.5 miles from the United States – Mexico border just in the foothills of Otay Mesa, which overlooks the Mexican border. The Otay Mesa premise shares their property with six other law enforcement agencies including the following:
- George Baily Detention Facility
- San Diego Correctional Facility
- Facility 8 Detention Facility
- East Mesa Reentry Facility
- East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility
- Multi-Jurisdictional Law Enforcement Firearms Training Complex
The prison cells in the Donovan State Prison were designed to only house one inmate in each. Unfortunately, due to overcrowding issues in the Donovan State Prison, many of the cells now house two inmates in each cell. In March of 2012, the Donovan State Prison inmate population was up to 3,666 inmates. This was nearly 166.6 percent of what the facility was designed for. The facility was only designed to house up to 2,208 inmates.
It was not until 1989, the Donovan State Prison opened its reception center. The reception center is where all inmates from Southern California will come to be accepted. Then in 2012, the Donovan State PRison changed its reception center mission. The facility completed three of it’s five buildings to sensitive yards.
Other important missions to the Donovan State Prison were to provide treatments for mental illnesses and identify any and all medical concerns the inmates may have.
The Donovan State Prison consists of 5 interfaith chapels. Every religion that is in Donovan State Prison will get a number of lockers to store their religious materials.
The Donovan State Prison even comes equipped with a bakery. This baker will serve not only the Donovan State Prison but 5 other California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities in the area. Every day the bakery will bake over 9,500 loaves of bread. There are 85 inmates in Donovan State Prison who work in the bakery.
The Donovan State Prison also has a shoe factory. The shoe factory makes the shoes that all inmates in any of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities wear. The shoe factory will make low-top and high top versions. The shoe factory will produce over 1,000 shoes every single day.
At one point the Donovan State Prison also was home to an eyeglass factory. However, this factory closed its doors back in 2009.
Back in November of 2013, Sirhan, the individual who was convicted for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy was transferred to the Donovan State Prison. This transfer was done on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Every week, all level 4 inmates will have 15 hours of yard time. A level 4 inmates are the maximum security inmates.Suggest Edit
