Folsom State Prison is located in Folsom, California. The facility is 20 miles away from the state capital of Sacramento. The Folsom State Prison is one of the 35 institutions within the state of California.

The Folsom State Prison opened its doors back in 1880. The Folsom State Prison is California’s state oldest prison. The first oldest prison in the state of California was San Quentin. Folsom State Prison was the first prison in the United States to get electricity. Folsom State Prison is one of the first maximum-security facilities.

Folsom State Prison is well-known for its concerts that are performed inside the facility. These concerts were held by Johnny Cash back in 1968. Johnny Cash even recorded a song known as the Folsom Prison Blues.

The Folsom State Prison is also well-known for their harsh conditions that they’ve endured over the past few decades after the California Gold Rush. As of current, the Folsom State Prison typically houses medium-security inmates. However, they do still currently house maximum-security inmates as well.

The Folsom State Prison started construction back in 1878. The construction started on the site of Stony Bar mining camp that was situated alongside the American River. The Folsom State Prison officially opened its doors back in 1880. The Folsom State Prison could house up to 1,800 inmates. The inmates spent most of their days in the dark. They were kept behind solid boilerplate doors in a cell measuring 4 by 8 ft. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that the cells had air holes.

In 1891, the state of California was in charge of the death penalty. All executions were done at the Folsom State Prison and the San Quentin State Prison. Between December of 1895 to December of 1937, 93 inmates were hanged.

The Folsom State Prison consists of 5 housing units, two dining halls, two smaller exercise yards, and a large central prison yard.
