Colorado State Prison-Watkins West is a minimum-custody private prison in Watkins, Colorado and is operated by the Colorado Department of Corrections. Its mission is to provide custody and treatment to a mixed population of 500 adult male DUI and non-violent general population inmates. This facility by contract also provides custody and care to 250 adult male inmates that are currently housed as Criminal Aliens (CA). Colorado State Prison-Watkins West opened in October 1997 and is operated and managed by The GEO Group.
The inmates housed at Colorado State Prison-Watkins West are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.
Inmates assigned to Colorado State Prison-Watkins West generally pose the least risk to public safety. They live in dormitories on a campus that resembles a school more than a prison. Inmates must have less than 8 years on their sentence, be non-violent with a clear disciplinary history to qualify for minimum designation. There is much less supervision of inmate movement within the prison than at any other custody level.
This prison meets most of the inmate’s needs, including dietary, health, fitness, education, religious practices, entertainment, and many others.
This facility offers common programs of adult basic education and helps inmates earn their General Education Degree. Colorado State Prison-Watkins West offers substance abuse treatments for many of the inmates who are currently incarcerated here.
In addition, inmates are offered religious services, Bible studies, and counseling. Work release opportunities are also available for inmates who qualify.
Inmates are given recreation time each day where they can go outside and exercise. Inmates are given three meals a day; all meals are approved by a dietician.
