Baker Re Entry Center is an all-male medium-security located in Sanderson, Florida. Opened since 1931, Baker Re Entry Center is one of Florida’s oldest correctional facilities. The current Warden is Robert May.
This facility also houses the Youthful Criminal Offenders Program (YCOP). The Youthful Criminal Offenders Program is a housing unit/program that accommodates a juvenile male population between ages 16-18. This housing unit is segregated from the adult male population at this facility. Education is mandatory for juveniles without a high school diploma. Offenders attend classes five days a week.
The current capacity for this facility is a little over 1,200 inmates. Baker Re Entry Center is one of the only sites in Florida that houses a special needs population that suffers from mental illness or mental retardation. Appropriate programming and support is in place for this special population.
Inmates are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are many educational and vocational training programs for all inmates. The mission of this facility is to promote and prepare the inmate to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Florida’s recidivism rate.
Several programs offered to inmates include educational opportunity, vocational training, work assignments, spiritual/religious opportunity and a variety of other classes and programming.
Those who are serving their sentence in Baker Re Entry Center are likely to have a history with substance abuse. In fact, it has been recorded that 80% of those housed in this facility have had some sort of history with substance abuse. Substance abuse programs such as Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are available to all inmates.
Inmates are served three meals a day, and they can buy snacks from the commissary. All meals are prepared by the kitchen staff and prison Trustees and are approved by a dietician.
