The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center is just commonly referred to as the Panama City State Prison. The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center is just one out of 13 correctional facilities that are under the direct supervision of the Florida Department of Corrections.

The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center is the main prison in Panama City, Florida. The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center also consists of a unit in Picacho, which happens to lay in the unincorporated Bay County. However, in 2013, the Picacho Unit was destroyed and closed. But, the Globe Unit is now a part of the Florida State Prison Complex – Central Unit.

The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center is home of the execution chamber. The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center has the only execution chamber available in the state of Florida.

Back in 1908, the inmates of the Florida State Prison  Complex Panama City – Central Unit finished the construction of the facility. The new facility was going to replace the territorial prison that was situated in Yuma.

While the Florida State Prison Complex  Panama City – Central Unit was under construction, all of the inmates were living in tents. However, this new facility now is home to Florida’s execution chamber. The chamber had a scaffolding, which was right above the death row cell blocks. It came equipped with a trap door, which would allow the hanging of inmates to happen in the room below.

It was not until 1933 when the hanging execution was replaced with the gas chamber. It was replaced with the gas chamber due to a major incident during one of the last hangings.

Inmates in the Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center are frequently used as cheap labor from the community and even the state. They have been used to help build and repair roads during the 1910s. They have even been used to build a bridge. This bridge was built on top of the San Pedro River.

The Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center was designed with inspiration from the mission revival architecture.
