This State – minimum security prison is operated by the Florida Department of Corrections to hold inmates who have been convicted to and sentenced for a crime in the state of Florida. Most of these inmates have been convicted of felonies and are serving more than a one year sentence.
The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are plenty of educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. Florida’s mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the Florida’s recidivism rate.
Inmates assigned to Franklin Work Camp generally pose the least risk to public safety. Inmates live in dormitories on a campus that resembles a school more than a prison. Inmates must have less than 8 years on their sentence, be non-violent with a clear disciplinary history to qualify for minimum designation. There is much less supervision of inmate movement within the prison than at any other custody level.
Some of the programs offered to inmates at the Franklin Work Camp are Work release, Alcoholics Anonymous, Religious Services, and GED preparation. Re-entry planning includes providing assistance with resume and cover letter writing and job interviewing skills, assisting in obtaining official documents, educational/study release, and community level custody.
Inmates have access to religious services, counseling, and they can meet with Clergy at their request. Inmates are given recreation time each day where they can go outside and exercise. All inmates are given three meals a day—all meals are approved by a dietician.
