Built-in the 1920s and opened since 1970, Atlantic Transitional Center is a minimum-security prison located in St. Petersburg, Florida for male felons. It was renovated in 1991, and then reopened to accommodate the growing population. The current capacity is 257 inmates.
Suncoast Community Release Center’s mission is to prepare adult male felons who are nearing the end of their incarceration to assume responsible citizenship. The second mission is to maintain an on-the-job training workforce of felons who have up to forty-two months left on their sentence to operate outside details for various state agencies at no cost to taxpayers. Suncoast Community Release Center is the host facility for the Metro Complex.
Atlantic Transitional Center is located of two five-story buildings with resident housing on three floors in each building which consists of rooms that each sleep from 2-6. There are nine on-the-job training programs for inmates located at various state agencies in Custodial Maintenance, Food Service, Building Maintenance, Auto Repair/Maintenance, Landscaping and Laundry Services.
Other programs for inmates include:
- Counseling programs including Family Violence, Reentry, Job Readiness, Matrix, Basics World of Work, Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous, Motivation For Change and Detour
- Recreation including General Recreation, Yard Call, Wellness Walk
- Religious Activities including Various Worship Services, Bible Study, Muslim Services and Prayers
- Vocational programs including Custodial Maintenance, Food Service, Building Maintenance, Auto Repair/Maintenance, Landscaping, Laundry Services.
Inmates are given three meals a day, and snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician. Meals are prepared by the prison staff and the prison Trustees. Trustees are inmates who have earned the trust of the prison officials and are eligible to work various jobs within the prison. They are paid a small amount for their services.
Inmates are encouraged to participate in rigorous daily activity each day. They are allowed to go outside for several hours a day to play sports or exercise. In their leisure time, inmates are allowed to watch TV or play cards in the commons area.
