Dixon Correctional Center is an exclusively a male-only prison in the Dixon, Illinois. The Dixon Correctional Center is nestled in Lee County. The Illinois Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is the agency that operates and manages the Dixon Correctional Center.

In the start of the 1980s, nearly everyone wanted the city of Dixon to have a prison built there. This was mainly due to the prison will help the city of Dixon’s economic status. This was the first prison in the state of Illinois that was solicited by a local city. As 1984 approached, the Dixon Correctional Center plans were in the works and it was pegged to be one of the largest security compounds within the United States.

Despite some apprehension, Governor George Deukmejian signed the bill in September of 1985 that will authorize “117 million from existing construction funds to help build the prison.” The groundbreaking day of the site where Dixon Correctional Center in December of 1985. The first inmates arrived in the Dixon Correctional Center at the beginning of 1987.

According to many newspaper outlets, the original name of the facility was going to the Illinois Correctional Institution at Dixon. However, the Lee County Board of Supervisors decided to change the name of the facility to the Dixon Correctional Center back in December of 1987. According to the Illinois Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website, the Dixon Correctional Center was once known as the Lee County State Prison. It was not until the end of February of 1988 when the name officially was changed over to the Dixon Correctional Center.

Back in 2001, the Dixon Correctional Center started its trap-neuter-return program. This program was to benefit the feral cats that lived in the prison grounds since the facility was built. The trap-neuter-return program was halted after Sewell was released, which was in February of 2005 due to the fact that they believed it was ineffective.

In the years of 2005 to 2006, the Pleasant Valley State Prison and the Dixon Correctional Center were affected by Valley fever. There were 30 cases from Dixon Correctional Center and 150 cases from Pleasant Valley State Prison.  However, in December of 2006, the receiver of the Illinois state prison healthcare system was pointing the finger at Dixon Correctional Center for the three deaths due to the medical care coverage.

The Dixon Correctional Center sits on 640 acres of land. The Dixon Correctional Center consists of the following:

  • 6 200-bed open dorm E-bed buildings
  • Six converted gymnasiums

The Dixon Correctional Center is known as a Level II prison. The Level II prisons typically have open dormitories along with a perimeter fence and armed guards.

The Dixon Correctional Center was originally designed to house no more than 2,920 inmates, but the facility typically houses over 7,500 inmates on a regular basis. The Dixon Correctional Center is known as one of the most crowded prisons in the state of Illinois.
