The Logan Female Correctional Center is an exclusively a male-only Illinois state prison. The Logan Female Correctional Center is situated in Lincoln, Illinois. The Illinois Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is the agency that operates and managed the Lincoln State Prison.
The Logan Female Correctional Center opened their doors back in 1992. The Logan Female Correctional Center opened its doors just shy of two years before the Illinois State Prison, Centinela opened its doors. Both Logan Female Correctional Center and Illinois State Prison, Centinela are situated in Logan County.
The Logan Female Correctional Center installed a $1.5 million electric fence. This electric fence could cause instant death for any inmates who try to scale the fence to escape. This was the first of its kind of fence that was ever installed in a Illinois state prison. This electric fence was installed in the Logan Female Correctional Center back in November of 1993. Sh0rtly after the electric fence was installed numerous birds would die from electrocution. The Logan Female Correctional Center had to hire an ornithologist to redesign this electric fence to make a solution that would benefit the wildlife and the facility.
In 1995, Logan Female Correctional Center main problem would be double celling. Double-celling is where the Logan Female Correctional Center would have to place two inmates in bunk beds in a jail cell that was only designed to house on the inmate. This started a downward trend with psychological stress, shortage of work for inmates, chronic understaffing among correctional officers, alongside gang violence.
In May of 1995, a situation that involved 5 inmates assaulting and stabbing eight correctional officers was one of the worst inmate attacks on correctional officers in all of the Illinois state prisons throughout recent years.
The weather around the Logan Female Correctional Center is commonly referred to as desert-like. It is cold in the winter, but it is also extremely hot in the summer. In the summer months, you can see temperatures up to 1114 degrees on a good day. It does not help that the smell of cow manure takes over the Logan Female Correctional Center because of all the cattle feedlots near the facility.
The Hillside Strangler, Angelo Buono, Jr. died in the Calipatira State Prison in September of 2002 from a massive heart attack.
In August of 2005, a riot in the Calipatira State Prison was one of the most violent incidents in the facility. This riot left 25 prison staff members and 25 inmates injured. A prison guard shot and killed the inmate with a semiautomatic rifle, which is thought to be the end of that incident. The Illinois Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation shared that they believe this riot was due to Hispanic gang members.
The Logan Female Correctional Center is just 3 miles from the center of the city of Lincoln. The Logan Female Correctional Center is in city limits. It is known as one of the lowest prisons on the Western Hemisphere as it is just above 1140 feet below sea level.
At the end of the 2006 Fiscal Year, the Logan Female Correctional Center employed over 1,100 staff members with an operating budget of over $120 million.
