Built in 1954 and open since then, Northern Reception & Classification Center is located in Joliet, Illinois.  This facility used to be a former military outpost used for radar purposes, but NICI now houses up to 2182 adult male inmates.

This low-security prison is operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections to hold inmates who have been convicted and sentenced for a crime in the state of Illinois. The majority of inmates serving time here are typically serving a sentence of 5 to 10 years, usually for drug or violence offenses.

Illinois’s mission is to promote and prepare the inmates to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state’s recidivism rate.

The current Warden of Northern Reception & Classification Center is Aaron Krieger.

The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level, and this level is determined at intake. There are many educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.

Some of the inmate programs at this facility are a GED program, Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous meetings, religious support including church services and Bible studies, work release programs, and a prison trusty program. Inmates are allowed recreation time each day outside of the prison where they can play basketball or exercise.

Inmates are given three meals a day, along with snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.

Most of the inmates at this facility are being incarcerated with the purpose of being rehabilitated and possibly released for probation.  Inmates who qualify for early release/probation will display a positive attitude and modify their behavior by participating in programs and evaluations at Northern Reception & Classification Center.
