Kansas Juvenile Correctional East - Male Inmate Search and Prison Information
Before the facility was called Kansas Juvenile Correctional East – Male it was known as the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility. The Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility was founded in 1879. It was mainly used as the State Reform School. It was Kansas’s first state institution for juveniles within the state.
Then in 1901, the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility was then renamed to the State Industrial School for Boys. Then 70 years later in 1971, the juveniles who were adjudicated delinquent or even miscreant were transferred out to the Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility.
Then in 1974, the State Industrial School for Boys was renamed again to be known as the Youth Center at Topeka. However, it went back to its original name Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility during the 1997 Legislative Session.
Then on July 1, 1997, the state of Kansas transferred the responsibility of the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services to the Juvenile Justice Authority or JJA for short.
In the spring of 2005, the operations here at the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility was merged with Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex. The Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex has an east and west unit. The East unit houses juvenile male inmates while the west unit houses the female juvenile inmates.
The Kansas Juvenile Correctional East – Male is situated on 60 acres in the northwest portion of Topeka, Kansas. The Kansas Juvenile Correctional East – Male is a medium and maximum-security juvenile facility.
Juveniles in Kansas Juvenile Correctional East – Male are typically adjudicated of crimes that are considered a felony if they committed this crime as an adult. The placement of a juvenile is completely determined by the matrix. The matrix was founded to place these violent and serious juvenile offenders into the correctional facility, while the non-violent juvenile offenders will receive community-bases programs.
The Kansas Juvenile Correctional East – Male also has a reception and diagnostic unit. This unit is where the male juvenile inmates will first enter into the juvenile correctional facility system.
