Bell County Forestry Camp is an exclusively a male-only prison in the Pineville, Kentucky. The Bell County Forestry Camp is nestled in Bell County. The Kentucky Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is the agency that operates and manages the Bell County Forestry Camp.
In the start of the 1980s, nearly everyone wanted the city of Pineville to have a prison built there. This was mainly due to the prison will help the city of Pineville’s economic status. This was the first prison in the state of Kentucky that was solicited by a local city. As 1984 approached, the Bell County Forestry Camp plans were in the works and it was pegged to be one of the largest security compounds within the United States.
Despite some apprehension, Governor George Deukmejian signed the bill in September of 1985 that will authorize “117 million from existing construction funds to help build the prison.” The groundbreaking day of the site where Bell County Forestry Camp in December of 1985. The first inmates arrived in the Bell County Forestry Camp at the beginning of 1987.
According to many newspaper outlets, the original name of the facility was going to the Kentucky Correctional Institution at Pineville. However, the Bell County Board of Supervisors decided to change the name of the facility to the Bell County Forestry Camp back in December of 1987. According to the Kentucky Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website, the Bell County Forestry Camp was once known as the Bell County State Prison. It was not until the end of February of 1988 when the name officially was changed over to the Bell County Forestry Camp.
Back in 2001, the Bell County Forestry Camp started its trap-neuter-return program. This program was to benefit the feral cats that lived in the prison grounds since the facility was built. The trap-neuter-return program was halted after Sewell was released, which was in February of 2005 due to the fact that they believed it was ineffective.
In the years of 2005 to 2006, the Pleasant Valley State Prison and the Bell County Forestry Camp were affected by Valley fever. There were 30 cases from Bell County Forestry Camp and 10 cases from Pleasant Valley State Prison. However, in December of 2006, the receiver of the Kentucky state prison healthcare system was pointing the finger at Bell County Forestry Camp for the three deaths due to the medical care coverage.
The Bell County Forestry Camp sits on 640 acres of land. The Bell County Forestry Camp consists of the following:

- 17 open dorm buildings
- The 100-cell administrative segregation unit
- 6 200-bed open dorm E-bed buildings
- Six converted gymnasiums
The Bell County Forestry Camp is known as a Level II prison. The Level II prisons typically have open dormitories along with a perimeter fence and armed guards.
The Bell County Forestry Camp provides its inmates with a number of programs including the following:

At the end of the fiscal year of 2007, the Bell County Forestry Camp employed 1,603 employees and had an operating budget of over $136 million. The Bell County Forestry Camp was originally designed to house no more than 2,920 inmates, but the facility typically houses over 7,00 inmates on a regular basis. The Bell County Forestry Camp is known as one of the most crowded prisons in the state of Kentucky.
