Built in 1994, Frankfort Group Home is a maximum-security prison located in Frankfort, Kentucky.
Frankfort Group Home houses the majority of death row inmates in the state. The current capacity of this facility is approximately 1,768 offenders. Inmates are housed in eleven housing units which consist of multiple occupancy cells and open dormitory housing.
Because Frankfort Group Home is a maximum-security prison, it is built behind heavy-duty perimeters, including high, thick walls and reinforced fences. There are cameras situated throughout the buildings for close monitoring of inmate actions. There are 44 acres inside the perimeter of the prison, and 84 acres outside of the prison.
There are currently 691 full-time employees. The current superintendent is Robert Gilmore.
Inmates at this facility are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. The mission of this facility is to prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Kentucky’s recidivism rate.
Frankfort Group Home offers inmates adult basic education, ESL, and GED courses. Offenders can also participate in vocational training that includes HVAC, refrigeration, carpentry, and business education.
Additional mental health treatment, parenting classes, programs aimed at deterring violence, sex offender treatment, and substance abuse treatment programs are available to inmates. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are programs that are available to inmates.
Selected inmates can work in the correctional industries program which employs 56 inmates in a garment factory operation. The factory produces the following items: denim blue jeans, denim release coats, sweatshirts, sweat pants, sweat shorts jumpsuits, and laundry bags for use at State Institutions. Correctional Industries also produces all staff hats including Garrison hats.
Inmates at this facility are fed three meals a day, and they can purchase snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.
