Kentucky State Prison Inmate Search and Prison Information
Opened since 1886, The Kentucky State Penitentiary, located near Eddyville in Lyon County, is the Department’s oldest and only maximum-security facility. This facility houses Kentucky’s Death Row Inmates. Kentucky State Penitentiary is also known as the “castle on the Cumberland.”
DeEdra Hart is the current Warden of Kentucky State Penitentiary. There are 856 male inmates housed at this facility.
Because this prison is a maximum-security facility, it is designed primarily to house violent offenders with longer sentences. Kentucky State Penitentiary is located behind heavy-duty perimeters, including high, thick walls and reinforced fences. There are cameras throughout the buildings for close monitoring of inmate actions.
Housing consists of single and double cells with very limited movement. The cells are self-contained built for 23 hours per day detainment, one-hour for recreation and fresh air outside. All perimeters are triple-fenced with extensive electronic surveillance.
Inmates are placed according to their custody level which is determined by their past criminal history and their sentencing. There are many educational and vocational training programs for all inmates. This facility’s mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison, thus lowering the Kentucky’s recidivism rate.
Inmates at Kentucky State Penitentiary are allowed one hour of recreation time outside each day, where they can play sports or exercise. Inmates are given three meals a day, along with snacks that they can purchase from the commissary. Prison kitchen staff and the prison trustees work in the kitchen to prepare the meals. All meals are approved by a dietician.
Despite it being a high-level security prison, inmates are offered many programs at this facility, including the following:
- Academic School
- Night School
- Adult Technical Education
- Pre-Release Program
- Sex Offender Treatment Program
- Drug and Alcohol Education Program
- Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT)
