The Kentucky State Reformatory is a medium-security prison located in LaGrange, Kentucky. This facility is under the administration of the Kentucky Justice Cabinet, Department of Corrections and has a capacity of 1501 inmates. Anna Valentine is the current Warden of this facility.
Opened since 1936, The Kentucky State Reformatory was the third prison built in Kentucky. The 12-story administration building was designed to house the offices of key staff members, a hospital and medical offices, and living quarters for correctional staff. There are five dormitories made up of individual cells where inmates live.
Other buildings making up the Kentucky State Reformatory include an Academic/Vocational School, a Gymnasium, a Chapel, a Dining Facility, an Inmate Canteen, a Visitation Building, and Medical Services Buildings.
There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates at Kentucky State Reformatory. The mission of Kentucky State Reformatory is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Kentucky’s recidivism rate.
Kentucky State Reformatory’s primary mission is to be a specialized institution to provide extensive mental health and medical services to inmates. The Medical Department provides medical treatment to all inmates. Additionally, they coordinate Health Care Services which includes the direct provision of routine and emergency medical and dental care and the provision of medical care of outside hospitals and private practitioners.
Offenders can earn a GED and adult basic education while incarcerated in this prison. Additionally, inmates can attend substance abuse treatment programs that include Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. A pre-release program is designed to address the concerns and challenges an inmate will face in their impending release. Inmates qualify for this program within 90 days of their release date.
Church services are available to inmates who are interested in attending. Inmates have the opportunity to receive counseling from clergy as well.
