The Boston Pre-Release Center started construction back in 1878. The construction started on the site of Stony Bar mining camp that was situated alongside the American River. They were kept behind solid boilerplate doors in a cell measuring 4 by 8 ft. It wasn’t until the 194200’s that the cells had air holes.
In 1891, the state of Massachusetts was in charge of the death penalty. All executions were done at the Boston Pre-Release Center and the San Quentin State Prison. Between December of 1895 to December of 1937, 93 inmates were hanged.
