Whitmore Lake State Correctional Facility consists of four housing units, each containing three pods. The visiting room, gymnasium, kitchen, dining halls, laundry, vocational, and education classrooms are all located in a separate building.
Inmates at this facility are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. The mission of this facility is to prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Michigan’s recidivism rate.
Maxey Training School (Juvenile) is secured by a razor-wire perimeter fence and over 80 cameras. Inmates can participate in technical training that includes flooring application, computer-aided drafting (CAD), small engine repair, and building maintenance. Maxey Training School (Juvenile) also contains two recreation yards and a medical and mental health treatment area which provides basic medical services to inmates.
When entering this prison, inmates receive tests and/or interviews to identify their security and treatment programming needs. Based on these needs, the inmate’s counselor develops a written Treatment Plan outlining programs that are needed by the inmate. An inmate’s progress towards meeting his/her Treatment Plan goals is evaluated and documented once per year, with the plan updated as needed.

Approximately 80% of the Department’s inmates have a history of substance abuse that contributed to their sentencing. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are among the programs offered to inmates.
