Nestled in one of the largest cities in Michigan, Manistee is the Oaks Correctional Facility. The Oaks Correctional Facility holds some of the most dangerous inmates in Michigan. They house the deadly, dangerous inmates alongside the sex offenders.
The Oaks Correctional Facility was designed and built back in 1881. The Oaks Correctional Facility has its inmates work making license plates and various woodwork projects for the state of Michigan. The Oaks Correctional Facility houses the death row inmates from the state, men and women combined. The Oaks Correctional Facility is the only prison within the state that has the execution chamber.
The Oaks Correctional Facility is situated in the northern part of Manistee. The facility sits on nearly 30 acres of land. The Oaks Correctional Facility was originally a territorial prison when it was built back in 1881. Originally, the Oaks Correctional Facility was not called this until the state of Michigan was granted statehood back in 1889.
As of today, there is still a huge portion of the original structure that remains. However, there are many structural changes that have happened throughout the years.
The Oaks Correctional Facility consists of 3 housing units. One housing unit is called the G. Norton Jameson Annex. This housing unit opened its doors to house inmates back in early 1993. The Jameson Annex consists of three housing units within a fully secure perimeter. They have a minimum-security unit, which is commonly referred to as Unit C. Unit C is situated outside of the perimeter fence.
When it comes to employment in the Oaks Correctional Facility, they will call into one of two categories: prison industries and institutional support. The institutional support is where people will work as clerks in a number of departments, food service, maintenance, and orderlies. While on the other hand, the prison industries will be where people will work on a variety of products such as data entry, upholstery, garments, printing, Barille unit, signs, machine shop, decal, book bindery, license plates, and carpentry. Everything excluding the data entry and garment work will be done inside the Oaks Correctional Facility. Majority of this work will be done directly for various government agencies.

Wallace A. Dow was the man who designed the Oaks Correctional Facility, which was constructed in 1882. The facility came equipped with a warden’s residence. The warden’s residence was finished in 1884.
It was not until the 1890s when inmates quarried stone to construct a wall to fully secure the prison yard. Then in 1881, Richard Pettigrew protested and succeeded in getting federal permission to build the jail in Manistee.
In April of 2011, Ronald Johnson, a correctional officer was beaten to death by two inmates in the Oaks Correctional Facility. These inmates were trying to escape. Both of these inmates were arrested and confined within the penitentiary grounds. They were both sentenced to death. However, there was a third inmate who received life in prison because they provided the materials for the other two inmates to use in the killing.
