Special Alternative Incarceration Facility is a minimum-security prison located in Chelsea, Michigan. It opened in 1988 and housed 450 male inmates with a segregation unit of 40 inmates.

The mission of this facility is to prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Michigan’s recidivism rate.
Special Alternative Incarceration Facility’s primary mission is to provide inmate labor for Department of Transportation road squads in Greene, Lenoir, Pitt and Beaufort counties. Offenders are assigned to work in food service, keeping the institution clean and/or performing maintenance to equipment, facilities and grounds.

Lenoir Community College works with the prison to offer full-time and part-time classes for adult basic education and preparation for the General Education Development tests for up to 30 inmates.
Additionally, Special Alternative Incarceration Facility offers various rehabilitative programs that include Yokefellow Ministry, Think Smart, Community Volunteer, Tri-County Transition Program, Strive Transition Program, Home Leaves, Community Volunteer Leaves, Work Release, Independent Studies, Napoleon Hill, Character Education, Cognitive Behavior Intervention, library, and recreation.
Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are among the substance abuse programs available to inmates. Meetings with Clergy and Bible studies are also available. Inmates are allowed recreation time each day where they can go outside and exercise or play sports.
Inmates at this facility are fed three meals a day which are prepared by the kitchen staff and the prison Trustees. Trustees are inmates who work within the prison and earn a small amount for their services. Inmates can also purchase snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.
