The Mississippi State Penitentiary located in Parchman, MS is also known as the Parchman Farm because it is a prison farm. The Mississippi State Penitentiary is the only prison in the state of Mississippi and the oldest as well.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary was established in 1901 and the inmates constructed the majority of the facility. This facility sits on about 28 square miles and is located in an unincorporated sunflower county in the Delta region.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary is a 4,840-bed facility that houses all custody level inmates which includes A and B custody (minimum and medium security) and C and D custody (maximum security). This facility also houses all the male inmates sentenced to death in Mississippi are held in MSP’s Unit 29 and the state execution chamber.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary inmates work on the manufacturing workshops as well as the prison farm. Marshall Turner is the superintendent of this facility. The farming unit in this prison is responsible for supplying food to three State prisons.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary has two wardens, three deputy wardens, and two associate wardens. This facility is operated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
There are 58 support buildings and seven housing units at the Mississippi State Penitentiary.
