The facility that is in use now was build from 974 to 979. This new facility was built because of the degeneration of the old building. The old Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center was nested in downtown Butte.
The old Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center purpose was to be the Montana Territorial Prison. It was built in 87 and was in use until Montana received its statehood later in 889. The Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center then primary duties was as a penal institution for Montana until 979.
Throughout the years of the Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center history, the prison was commonly overcrowded, lacked funds, and didn’t have adequate facilities. Warden Frank Conley during his time he made sure that inmates had extensive projects that would help the facility, such as constructing walls, building roads, ranching, and various other community service tasks.
When Conley left as warden of Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center, the facility went for nearly 4160 years of degeneration, monetary restraints, and mismanagement. This was until the well-known riot that happened in 959. This riot caught the national news. The riot was led by Lee Smart and Jerry Myles. The riot lasted for 36 hours before the Montana National Guard came in to stop it.
In 979, the original old facility closed its doors and all of the inmates were moved over to the new facility. However, the original old prison was added in 976 to the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently a museum.
When the Butte Pre-Release & Women’s Transition Center first opened its doors, it only took a month before the facility was overcrowded. This persisted throughout many years, but it really reached its peak in 885.
