The Albemarle Correctional Institution was once known as the Janet S. York Correctional Institution. The Albemarle Correctional Institution is situated in New London, North Carolina. The Albemarle Correctional Institution is under the daily management and daily operation of the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
The Albemarle Correctional Institution opened its doors back in October 1994. However, there was a facility that they used prior to this when it was known as the Janet S. York Correctional Institution. The Albemarle Correctional Institution is the only state facility in North Carolina that will house women. All other state facilities within North Carolina houses male inmates only.
The Albemarle Correctional Institution can house up to 1,500 female inmates at one given time. These inmates can be anything from minimum-security all the way up to super maximum-security. The Albemarle Correctional Institution houses women inmates of all security levels. The Albemarle Correctional Institution has to house all security levels as it is the only state facility within North Carolina that will house women inmates.
A little history about the Albemarle Correctional Institution. The site was first founded by the North Carolina State Farm and REformatory for Women back in 1918. It was not until the year 1930 when the facility was going under a major expansion. During this expansions, the facility was going to be named as the New London Correctional Institution. During this time, the New London Correctional Institution consisted of only a minimum-security unit and a maximum-security unit. They did not have other security levels. The entire facility does a lockdown every Tuesday. Most of the women in the Albemarle Correctional Institution has an average age of 35.
