Built and opened in 1976, Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution is located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina and houses up to 816 male felons. Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution’s mission is to ensure public safety and effectively house close security offenders while operating a safe and secure facility.
This facility offers Mental Health Level III services including a Supportive Living Unit, nine acute care beds, and seven crisis stabilization beds. Additionally, this facility provides Mental Health evaluation and support services for six facilities. This facility serves as a host facility for a transportation hub, a 17-bed infirmary as well as several on-site specialty clinics that offer to provide care on an as-needed basis.
Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution is made up of seven housing units or 754 GP beds in open dormitory, tiered living unit. Housing also includes Acute Care, Crisis Stabilization, hospital infirmary, and segregation. This facility also houses a C.E.R.T. Team and a Tactical Squad.
The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. North Carolina’s mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower the state’s recidivism rate.
Work release programs include Food Distribution Warehouse, Outside Grounds, North Carolina Military College, Care and Custody, Arnall Building, Food Distribution Unit Meat Plant, Food Distribution Maintenance, Food Distribution, Vehicle Maintenance, GCI Warehouse, and North Carolina State Patrol.
Academic programs include GED, ABE, Literacy Remedial Education, and Special Education. Other support programs include HIV Awareness, Positive Mental Attitude, Re-Entry, T4C, Celebrate Recovery, Family Violence, Integrity Program, Numerous Mental Health Groups, M4C, and Alcoholics Anonymous.
Inmates are offered several religious activities including various Worship Services, Gospel Music, and Pastoral Counseling. Vocational programs include work in Food Preparation, Horticulture, Graphic Arts, Maintenance, Fork Lift operation and a Barber program.
Inmates are allowed recreation time each day where they can exercise or enjoy being outside.
