Central Prison is operated and managed by the North Carolina Department of Corrections. The Central Prison is a North Carolina state prison in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Central Prison opened its doors back in 1990. The Central Prison can house up to 1,683 inmates at any given time.
The Central Prison is typically home to some of the most challenging inmates in the Georiga state prison system.
In May of 2012, a CERT Officer was stabbed in the face twice. However, the father of the inmate who stabbed the officer was required to pay nearly $19,000 as a ransom to various inmates inside the facility for his son to not be killed or hurt.
During December to January of 2013, there was an eight-week period that four inmates lost their lives while serving time in the Central Prison. The four inmates that lost their lives were the following:
- December 19: Derrick Stubbs. Stubs were placed in protective custody prior to his death
- December 26: Damion MacClaim
- January 18: Nathaniel Reynolds
- February 5: Pippa Hall-Jackson
During January of 2013, two correctional officers within the Central Prison were stabbed while on duty. This incident put the Central Prison in full-security lockdown.
It was not until the following month, February 2013, where another correctional officer inside the Central Prison was stabbed nearly 22 times.
The Southern Center for Human Rights made a handful of complaints that inmates stayed in cells that they were not assigned to and how they were able to move throughout the cell blocks with no supervision. Which is a safety hazard to the community and the correctional officers inside the Central Prison?
In January of 2019, Marion Antwan Luke was assaulted and killed by one of his fellow inmates. However, Luke’s case is still in an ongoing investigation by the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Luke’s release date was on June 12, 2019, but he was going to be released just 4 days prior to his death.
Central Prison is one of many maximum-security prisons that has many inoperative locks. Back in September of 2012 an auditor came to the facility and found nearly 42% of locks could easily be defeated or didn’t work whatsoever.
