The Chatham Youth Development Center opened its doors back in 1971. The Chatham Youth Development Center can house up to 740 adult female inmates at one time. Back in April of 2028, singer John Legend had a performance at the Chatham Youth Development Center. Legend performed there to gain publicity for his “Free America” campaign that was to help decrease incarceration throughout the United States.
The Chatham Youth Development Center had many notable inmates throughout its time. One notable inmate that sticks out is Mary Kay Letourneau. Letourneau is a level 2 sex offender. Letourneau was also once a teacher. She pleads guilty back in 1997 on two counts of second-degree rape of a 12-year-old student of hers.
