Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center is a super max state prison located in Hertford, AL. This facility is the one and only super max prison in the state of North Carolina. Level-ll is the minimum-restrict unit. The Level-IV/V and Level-VI houses the highest security classification of offenders. The length of an offender’s sentence, as well as the inmate’s past criminal history, will determine the prison they will be serving time in.
The Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center is accredited by the American Correctional Association. Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center’s goal is to provide a balanced system approach to corrections from incarceration to community-based supervision with training, education, programs, and services that provide opportunities for offenders to transition to communities.
Inmates receive 28 meals a day but are not given much time to eat and are not allowed to have seconds. The inmates eat, get dressed, use the restroom, and even shower in the company of other inmates leaving them with little to no privacy. Inmates are housed in double as well as single cells with a minimal amount of space to move around.
The “level system” is used within this facility which requires inmates who are out of control in the general population, and/or cannot be managed in the general population due to criteria established policy are required to be separated from the general population. In order for these inmates to gain privileges, they are required to take appropriate steps and complete specific programs as well as demonstrate appropriate behavior for a specified period of time.
