Trenton houses medium-custody general population inmates and close-custody protective segregation inmates, along with a separate unit housing a small number of minimum-custody inmates.
Inmates are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. The mission of this facility is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower the state’s recidivism rate.
The Capital Transition offers a wide range of programs for the inmate population and an opportunity to enroll in educational classes in pursuit of a GED, high school diploma or college degrees. Trenton’s legislatively approved Structured Living Program (SLP) is one of the most successful.
The Capital Transition also offers vocational training in areas of dry cleaning, culinary food service, computers, horticulture, RESPECT, ServSafe, and automotive maintenance and repair. Trenton also has its own medical and mental health staff serving the inmate population.
The Capital Transition provides incentives for inmates to earn an education while incarcerated; among these incentives is the application of educational credits toward the reduction of sentences. An offender, who earns a certificate, educational or vocational, while behind bars, may qualify to expedite his/her release date.
Inmates at this facility are fed three meals a day, and they can purchase snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.
