The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center is nestled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center is under the management and daily operation here at the New Mexico Department of Corrections. The New Mexico Department of Corrections is the agency that is responsible for ensuring that the Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center is up to state and national standards.

The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center is a maximum-security state facility. The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center specializes in keeping inmates who are very difficult for other facilities to manage. Most of the inmates in the Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center have many behavioral issues that the other state facilities are not equipped to handle.

The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center offers these inmates a secure, yet safe environment that can help modify inmate’s behaviors to a more acceptable level, where they can later be returned back into the general population group.

The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center consists of two housing units. Within these housing units, you will find nearly 211 general population inmates, alongside the disciplinary/segregation units. However, here at the Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center, they can only house up to 500 adult male inmates at one given time.

The Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center is all about privilege. They want their inmates to earn privilege through good behavior. This is why the Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center put together a three-phase system. This system will reward inmates for their excellent behavior all while giving them privileges such as earned wages, phone calls, television time, leisure time, canteen items, dayroom time, group education, group treatment, property allowance, and group recreation.

When an inmate displays good behavior for a certain length of time, they may be eligible to go into a less restrictive maximum-security state facility. However, in order for this to happen, the inmates will have to go through this three-phase system. Inmates going through this system will need to partake in programs such as rational emotive therapy, anger management, cognitive group intervention program, fee your minds, turning point, and life skills classes.

However, if an inmate does not display good behavior, they will be kept in administrative confinement. Most of the inmates that are in the New Mexico Secure Program facility are in administrative confinement for months or even years. This is where they will have NO contact with anyone for at least 22 hours every single day.
