The Brookwood Secure Center is a medium-security detention center that houses female offenders. Custody level is determined by the inmate’s past criminal history as well as the length of the inmate’s sentence. This facility was originally built in 894 as the Western House of Refuge for Women. This facility was also the Claverack State Training School at one time.
The New York State Department of corrections and Community Supervision is responsible for managing the inmates housed within the Brookwood Secure Center. Currently, the maximum capacity for this prison is ,247 inmates.
The inmates eat, get dressed, use the restroom, and even shower in the company of other inmates leaving them with little to no privacy.
The Brookwood Secure Center in Claverack, NY offers a variety of programs and services for the inmates to participate in. These programs and services prepare the inmates to succeed in life when they are released into the community. All inmates are encouraged to participate in the following programs and services that apply to help each individual:

Depending on the risk level of the offender the sex offender treatment program can take anywhere from 6 – 8 months to complete. The medical health care and mental health care are contracted services. Inmates are also able to earn their associate’s degree in liberal studies or credits at Medaille College.
The Brookwood Secure Center inmates have the opportunity to earn an income by working in the following Correctional Industries program:
- Engraved Sign Shop
- Metal Shop
Inmates within the Brookwood Secure Center also have the opportunity to get vocational training in the following fields:
- Cosmetology
- Custodial Maintenance
- Building Maintenance
- Horticulture
- General Business
A new skill will allow an inmate to be able to find and keep a job once they are released doing meaningful work that will help sustain and support themselves.
