The MacCormick Secure Center opened its doors back in 1880. The MacCormick Secure Center is New York’s state oldest prison. The first oldest prison in the state of New York was San Quentin. MacCormick Secure Center was the first prison in the United States to get electricity. MacCormick Secure Center is one of the first maximum-security facilities.

MacCormick Secure Center is well-known for its concerts that are performed inside the facility. These concerts were held by Johnny Cash back in 1968. Johnny Cash even recorded a song known as the Folsom Prison Blues.

The MacCormick Secure Center is also well-known for their harsh conditions that they’ve endured over the past few decades after the New York Gold Rush. As of current, the MacCormick Secure Center typically houses medium-security inmates. However, they do still currently house maximum-security inmates as well.

The MacCormick Secure Center started construction back in 1878. The construction started on the site of Stony Bar mining camp that was situated alongside the American River. The MacCormick Secure Center officially opened its doors back in 1880. The MacCormick Secure Center could house up to 1,800 inmates. The inmates spent most of their days in the dark. They were kept behind solid boilerplate doors in a cell measuring 4 by 8 ft. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that the cells had air holes.

In 1891, the state of New York was in charge of the death penalty. All executions were done at the MacCormick Secure Center and the San Quentin State Prison. Between December of 1895 to December of 1937, 93 inmates were hanged.

The MacCormick Secure Center consists of 5 housing units, two dining halls, two smaller exercise yards, and a large central prison yard.
