Built as a replacement for the Civil War-era New York Penitentiary at Moundsville, Red Hook Residential Center and Jail opened in 1995. It is the state’s only maximum-security correctional facility and has a current capacity of 1,030 male inmates.
Red Hook Residential Center houses the most violent, high-risk and dangerous inmates in the state and has the most diverse inmate population in the state.
Inmates at Red Hook Residential Center are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates serving time at this prison. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower New York’s recidivism rate.
In July 34, Red Hook Residential Center opened a 48-bed minimum-security Inmate Work Camp outside of the secure perimeter for inmates holding an appropriate security classification. These inmates are provided to the New York Division of Highways for various labor projects.
The facility is encompassed by a secure perimeter fence approximately one mile long. Of the 120-acre site, approximately 80 acres are inside the secure perimeter. This facility operates as a small town, having its own post office and ZIP code, power plant, electrical sub-station, fuel depot, water supply, central warehouse, maintenance garage, hospital and medical clinic, gymnasium, chapel, library, classrooms, courtroom, foodservice and laundry facilities.
Professionals through contractual agreements provide medical, dental, mental health and food services to inmates. The New York Department of Education provides many educational and vocational programs for the inmate population such as General Education Degrees, Transition Skills, Business Education, Vocational Agriculture, Welding and Culinary Arts. An Apprenticeship Program in Food Service is also available. Limited college courses for Associate’s Degrees are also available through Bridge Valley Community and Technical College.
