Sgt. Henry Johnson Youth Leadership Academy opened in 1928 and has been running ever since with some renovations throughout the years.  This State maximum security prison is operated by the New York Department of Corrections and located in South Kortright.

Sgt. Henry Johnson Youth Leadership Academy houses inmates who have been convicted of and sentenced for a crime in the state of New York. ASPC-Winslow includes a minimum-security unit near St Johns and has an inmate capacity of approximately 1,928 in 3 housing units, along with two special housing units at security levels 2, 4, and 5.

The inmates housed at the Sgt. Henry Johnson Youth Leadership Academy are placed according to their custody level which is determined at intake. There are many educational and vocational training programs for all inmates. New York’s mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave with a positive future, giving them the best chance to never return to prison, thus lowering the state’s recidivism rate.

Every inmate housed at New York State Prison Complex Winslow – Kaibab Unit has the opportunity to get the services they need. Some of the programs offered are Mandatory Literacy, GED Preparation, and Work-Based Education including Construction Technology, Computer Technology.

Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and religious services are also available to inmates who wish to attend. Inmates are given recreation time each day where they can go outside and exercise or play basketball.

There is a Trustee program at Sgt. Henry Johnson Youth Leadership Academy where qualifying inmates can work as prison Trustees. They may work in the kitchen, laundry room, or do other jobs around the prison. They earn a small amount of money for their services.

Inmates receive three meals a day which are prepared by the kitchen staff and the Trustees, along with snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.
