How Did Sing Sing Correctional Facility Get Its Name?

“Sing Sing” actually came from “Sinck Sinck” Indian tribe. The land where Sing Sing Correctional Facility actually sits on was purchased from this Indian tribe back in 1685. However, then in 1970, they changed the official name of the facility to Ossining Correctional Facility, but it was then changed back to Sing Sing Correctional Facility in 1985.

There are currently plans in the works to convert the first-ever cell block from 1825 into a time-specific museum.

The Sing Sing Correctional Facility property is technically bisected thanks to the Metro-North Railroad’s four-track Hudson Line.

The Sing Sing Correctional Facility is the fifth prison to be built in the great state of New York. The first-ever prison built was Newgate Prison, which was constructed back in 1797 in Greenwich Village. Followed by Auburn Prison, which as built-in 1816.

It was not until 1824 when Elam Lynds received permission from the New York Legislature to construct a new modern facility. Keep in mind that Lynds was at the time the current warden for the Auburn Prison. With this task at hand, Lynds spent the next few months researching the best possible location for this prison to sit on. Lynds considered the Bronx, Silver Mine Farm, Staten Island, and even areas in and around Mount Pleasant.

In the end, Lynds decided it was best to build the prison on Mount Pleasant, but near the ever so small village of Sing Sing. The New York Legislature approved $20,100 to purchase the land. The land was nearly 130 acres.

This is when Lynds selected just around 100 inmates from the Auburn prison to transfer them to the new location, where they will be responsible for building the Sing Sing Correctional Facility.

It was not until 1826 when the Sing Sing Correctional Facility officially opened its doors. Sing Sing Correctional Facility was dubbed a model prison that would soon make a profit for the state of New York.

As of today, Sing Sing Correctional Facility is home to over 2,000 inmates. The Sing Sing Correctional Facility currently employs just around 1,000 staff members. The Sing Sing Correctional Facility typically has over 5,000 visitors that come through their doors on a monthly basis.

The first cellblock that was ever used, or what is also known as the 1825 cellblock is not in use anymore.
