The Old Athens County Jail is now a historic site for people to visit when they come to Athens County, Ohio. The old or what is now known as the original Athens County Jail was built back in 1903. This correctional facility was in operation until 1965 when the county officially replaced this old correctional facility with a more modern correctional facility.
The old or original Athens County Jail was officially added or placed into the National Register of Historic Places in August of 1982. You can find the original Athens County Jail on North Jefferson Street.
You should also know that the original Athens County Jail was the place where the last hanging in the county took place.
The new facility has been in continuous operation since it opened back in 1965.
