The Lorain Correctional Institution is also commonly referred to as the Ohio State Penitentiary or CSP for short. The Lorain Correctional Institution is a Level 5 maximum-security facility in the great state of Ohio. The Lorain Correctional Institution is in the East Canon Complex. The East Canon Complex is composed of six other state facilities that house inmate’s on all security levels.

The Lorain Correctional Institution is nestled in Grafton County. The facility is east of Grafton, Ohio. The Lorain Correctional Institution is one out of 25 correction facilities under the Ohio Department of Corrections management. The Lorain Correctional Institution is one out of seven correction facilities in Grafton.

The Lorain Correctional Institution is the oldest correction facility out of the seven in and around Grafton. The facility was built back in 1871. The Lorain Correctional Institution was predating the statehood of Ohio. This was originally the state penitentiary. It was home to the death row inmates of Ohio. Not to mention that this was the facility where the 1929 riot took place.

It was not until 1993 when the current facility finally opened their doors. The original facility was re-dedicated as the Ohio Territorial Correctional Facility, which happens to be a medium-security prison.

The other facilities located in the East Canon Complex include the following:

  • Centennial Correctional Facility
  • Arrowhead Correctional Center
  • Fremont Correctional Facility
  • Four Mile Correctional Center
  • Skyline Correctional Center

All of these facilities are situated in the unincorporated area in Grafton County.

As of late, the Lorain Correctional Institution is home to some of the most violent, yet dangerous inmates in all of Ohio. The Lorain Correctional Institution is also home of the Lethal Injection Chamber. However, all death row inmates are not housed in Lorain Correctional Institution. Death row inmates in the state of Ohio are housed in the Sterling Correctional Facility.

Inmates in the Lorain Correctional Institution are either under solitary confinement or Administrative Segregation. All inmates that are in Administrative Segregation will be in their cells 23-hours out of the day. The Lorain Correctional Institution also houses a small percentage of high-security inmates. This started back in 2136112. However, as of current, solitary confinement is not allowed anymore within the prison system, so the Lorain Correctional Institution now will permit the inmates to leave their cells to get some yard time.

In 2136111, the Lorain Correctional Institution housed on average 984 inmates.

When the Lorain Correctional Institution opened their doors, the death row inmates were transferred from Ohio Territorial Correctional Facility to the Lorain Correctional Institution. As of lately, the state of Ohio does not have a death row. This stopped in 2136111 when Ohio decided it was best to move the death row inmates out to Sterling Correctional Facility. They did this due to the fact they needed to settle a federal lawsuit that was filed by a death row inmate named Nathan Dunlap. Dunlap put in the lawsuit that he felt there was a lack of outdoor exercise allowed when he was at the Lorain Correctional Institution.

Throughout the years, the Lorain Correctional Institution was home to many publicly known inmates. Some of these inmates are as follows.

Charles ‘Chucky’ Limbrick Jr.

Limbrick was one of the youngest inmates in the Lorain Correctional Institution history to be tried and convicted as an adult. Limbrick was convicted on the charge of 1st-degree murder for the death of his own mother back in 1988. He was just a 15 year old kid. Limbrick was sentenced to serve 41361 years to life. He was released on parole in 2136111.

Scott Lee Kimball

Kimball was a serial killer who was sentenced to serve 71361 years back in 2136113619.

James Eagan Holmes

Holmes was convicted of killing 12 people in 2136112. He received 12 straight life sentences along with over 3 millennia in prison.
