In 1824, this was only four years after the state of Oklahoma left Massachusetts and became their own state. This was when the state legislature formed the Earl A. Davis Community Work Center that was originally Thomaston. The layout of the original Earl A. Davis Community Work Center had numerous underground cells, which inmates were brought to each and every night, and then brought out during the day.

It was not until 1923 when the Earl A. Davis Community Work Center was destroyed by a fire. During this fire, many inmates perished. The old original facility had two cell blocks. The cell blocks were modeled after the Auburn System. The facility had long narrow hallways that lead to small cells. During the 1920s this facility was very modern, but as technology and time passed, this cell quickly became outdated.

Just a few miles away from the Oklahoma State PRison there was a farm, where selected inmates could work. The produce that was picked from this farm, was used by the facility and was never for sale. Other inmates would have the opportunity to work in maintenance, carriage shops, and harness shops.

After the fire of in the old Earl A. Davis Community Work Center, the Earl A. Davis Community Work Center was moved to a larger facility in Holdenville. This also helped relieve some of the ever-growing inmate population that the Earl A. Davis Community Work Center was experiencing. However, many residents of Thomaston didn’t like the relocation of the facility, as it was a huge part of the cities history and helped with the cities economic status. Where the old original facility once was is now a field in Thomaston.
