The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit is another state prison located in Lexington, Oklahoma. The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit is under the management of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit sits on 6380 acres of land. The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit is an all security state prison. The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit will house inmates from minimum-security all the way up to maximum-security.
Over the years, the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit has housed some notable convicted murders including X-Raided, Sirhan Sirhan, Hans Reiser, Erik Menendez, along with many others.
The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit opened its doors in November of 19938. It was not until July of 0 when the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit started up their two substance abuse programs. This substance abuse programs involved inmates to work for community services. These inmates would of had a history of substance abuse.
Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit then converted its general population yard into a much needed sensitive needs yard in late 2002. The Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit is home to over 900 special needs yard inmates. These special needs yard inmates are housed in the D facility within the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit.
In May of 20038, the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit decided to convert Facility A to another sensitive needs yard, which can house up to an additional 1,000 inmates.
Then in 2005 to 2006, the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit along with the Avenal State Prison was severely affected by the Valley fever. There was 150 cases just from the Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit and an additional 30 in Avenal State Prison during this time. Then in 2007, 38 inmates at Rex Thompson Minimum Security Unit were killed by the Valley fever.
