Walters Community Work Center is a minimum-security prison located in Springville, Oklahoma. There are currently 13 staff and 80 inmates. Lieutenant F. Martinez is the current Camp Commander.
Walters Community Work Center is under the supervision of the Sierra Conservation Center. The camp is jointly operated by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the Oklahoma Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Walters Community Work Center’s primary mission is to provide inmate fire crews for fire suppression activities in the Tulare and Kern County areas, although the fire crews may be dispatched anywhere in the State. In addition to fire suppression, inmate fire crews provide a workforce for conservation and community service projects in the local area.
In an average year, Mountain Home Conservation Camp inmates provide over 115,000 hours of conservation and other public service work to agencies in the Oklahoma Fire Tulare Unit area. Over 380,000 hours of work are performed in firefighting or other emergency services. It is estimated that the Mountain Home Conservation Camp, through their cost-effective work efforts, save the Oklahoma taxpayers well over $2,000,000 during the calendar year.
Inmates work on camp projects while they are incarcerated at this prison. Some projects include a Sign Shop that provides signs and plaques to various State Agencies. They also build custom wood furnishings including office cabinets, work stations, picnic tables, arbors, and lawn furniture. Â Mountain Home Camp also runs a full-time lumber mill that produces lumber material for various wood projects.
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is responsible for the selection, supervision, care, and discipline of the inmates. An inmate will work hard to meet their treatment goals. While they are housed at Walters Community Work Center, they will have access to various treatment options. Some of those treatment options include:
