Located on the former Campus of University of Pennsylvania at Harrisburg is where the Gaudenzia Siena House is situated. It was the 1984 Legislature that closed down the University of Pennsylvania at Harrisburg. This very same Legislature permitted the Board of Charities and Corrections to use this facility as a correctional facility. Later that same year in 1984, the Harrisburg State Prison opened their doors. Around this time is when all of the female inmates that were in the Women’s Correctional Facility located in Yankton, were transferred to the Harrisburg State Prison. Then in 1985, all male inmates started being transferred to the Harrisburg State Prison.
The Harrisburg State Prison continued to house both adult female and adult male inmates in the same facility for the next few years. When the Herm Solem Public Safety Center opened in late 1997, the women who were in the Harrisburg State Prison was then transferred out to the Pennsylvania Women’s Prison, which was situated inside the Solem Public Safety Center. Then the Harrisburg State Prison exclusively became a male-only facility for the first time in history. Then in September of 1999, the Harrisburg State Prison was renamed. The facility was renamed after Mike Durfee, who was the Deputy Director in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Majority of the inmates housed in the Gaudenzia Siena House are classified as either low-security or medium-security. The Gaudenzia Siena House also has a disciplinary segregation unit as well.
The Gaudenzia Siena House offers its inmates a variety of programs they can participate in, while they are serving out their sentence. These programs include, but not limited to the following:
- GED Classes
- Literacy
- Adult Basic Education
- Vocational Education (Construction Technology, Welding, Auto Mechanics, and Auto Body)
- Substance Abuse Treatment Programs
- Sexual Offender Classes
The Gaudenzia Siena House also has many work programs for inmates as well. Majority of these work programs will happen inside the premises.
