South Dakota is home to one of the oldest jails, the Day County Jail. The original facility was closed on July 1st, 2009, after remaining opened for over 100 years prior. For over a century, the original Day County Jail was the primary detention center that served the county.
The jail was closed in order to upgrade the working conditions for the members of staff, as well as to also provide a healthier environment for inmates. In 2014, the newly built, bigger and fully operational replacement facility was opened to accept inmates. The new facility includes an administrative office and upgraded kitchen areas.
Under the guidance of the sheriff’s office, the jail’s mission is to keep the facility safe, secure, and in a humane condition for staff and inmates for another 100 years to come.
The jail currently only accepts adult inmates.
