Nestled in one of the largest cities in South Dakota, Sioux Falls is the South Dakota State Penitentiary.  The South Dakota State Penitentiary holds some of the most dangerous inmates in South Dakota. They house the deadly, dangerous inmates alongside the sex offenders.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary was designed and built back in 1881. The South Dakota State Penitentiary has its inmates work making license plates and various woodwork projects for the state of South Dakota. The South Dakota State Penitentiary houses the death row inmates from the state, men and women combined. The South Dakota State Penitentiary is the only prison within the state that has the execution chamber.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary is situated in the northern part of Sioux Falls. The facility sits on nearly 30 acres of land. The South Dakota State Penitentiary was originally a territorial prison when it was built back in 1881. Originally, the South Dakota State Penitentiary was not called this until the state of South Dakota was granted statehood back in 1889.

As of today, there is still a huge portion of the original structure that remains. However, there are many structural changes that have happened throughout the years.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary consists of 3 housing units. One housing unit is called the G. Norton Jameson Annex. This housing unit opened its doors to house inmates back in early 1993.  The Jameson Annex consists of three housing units within a fully secure perimeter. They have a minimum-security unit, which is commonly referred to as Unit C. Unit C is situated outside of the perimeter fence.

When it comes to employment in the South Dakota State Penitentiary, they will call into one of two categories: prison industries and institutional support. The institutional support is where people will work as clerks in a number of departments, food service, maintenance, and orderlies. While on the other hand, the prison industries will be where people will work on a variety of products such as data entry, upholstery, garments, printing, Barille unit, signs, machine shop, decal, book bindery, license plates, and carpentry. Everything excluding the data entry and garment work will be done inside the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Majority of this work will be done directly for various government agencies.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary also offers inmates the following programs:

  • GED Classes
  • Adult Basic Education
  • Literacy Classes

Wallace A. Dow was the man who designed the South Dakota State Penitentiary, which was constructed in 1882. The facility came equipped with a warden’s residence. The warden’s residence was finished in 1884.

It was not until the 1890s when inmates quarried stone to construct a wall to fully secure the prison yard.  Then in 1881, Richard Pettigrew protested and succeeded in getting federal permission to build the jail in Sioux Falls.

In April of 2011, Ronald Johnson, a correctional officer was beaten to death by two inmates in the South Dakota State Penitentiary. These inmates were trying to escape. Both of these inmates were arrested and confined within the penitentiary grounds. They were both sentenced to death. However, there was a third inmate who received life in prison because they provided the materials for the other two inmates to use in the killing.
