Nestled off of Highway 85, you will find the South Dakota State Prison Complex Lewis. Here you will find seven units that house a variety of the prison security level inmates. One of the units is known as the South Dakota Women’s Prison. Overall, the entire South Dakota State Prison Complex Lewis is under the management and daily operation of the South Dakota Department of Corrections. The South Dakota Department of Corrections is responsible not only for South Dakota Women’s Prison but for 12 other state facilities in South Dakota as well.
The South Dakota Women’s Prison is a mixture of level 2 and level 3 inmates. Here in the South Dakota Women’s Prison they do things a bit different, they mix the level 2 and level 3 inmates. Most other facilities will keep these inmates separate. A level 2 and a level 3 facility is a medium and high-security facility. The inmate to correctional officer ratio is pretty even with one another.
The inmates in the South Dakota Women’s Prison will have a structured day. All inmates will have access to a number of programs and services they can partake in while they are going through their rehabilitation process. These programs include, but not limited to:

Inmates will also be allowed to have visitors and call their family and friends. In order to visit or talk to an inmate here at the South Dakota Women’s Prison, you will need to fill out the following application and send in a $25 money order for your background check. This process to being approved can take up to 60 days depending on how backed up they are with applications.
